P3.1
IDEAS

- Horse yard management, what happens in a day on the yard?
- Life guard story. Has she ever had to jump in and saved anyone? Any stories?
- A ballet dancers life. How do they deal with the physical stress?
- Conspiracy theories. Are they real? How did they come about?
- Growing up without a parent. How they deal with life and stay motivated and happy?


I have underlined my best two ideas and got feedback from my class mates about them. Below are the two I think will be best to explore.

TWO IDEA DEVELOPMENTS

Horse Yard Management Idea

This radio story idea is based around how people manage a horse yard every day and what goes on behind the scenes. It will look into how tiring it is to do every single day and what gives people motivation. Horses can also get a lot of different problems with their health so I will be asking why they continue to look after horses and what they enjoy about it.

The sound effects that I could put into this idea are horses shoes walking against concrete, tack being jingled around, tack box being picked up, food being mixed, hay nets getting filled, the sound of the beats of trot and canter. These will all be easy to record separately as it can be fairly quiet on a horse yard. 

To get atmospheric sound I was planning on recording the normal background noise, the wind in the trees, birds, horses walking round in stables and on concrete. 

The music will be quite quiet in the background when there isn't any dialogue going on. It will be calming, or it will go to the beat of the horses canter. There may be a radio in the background.

The dialogue will be between me (the interviewer) and the interviewee. I will ask questions and get the answers back. I think that I will cut out my questions out and just have it as her continually talking.

Life as a Life Guard


This story will explain what a life guard does in a shift at work and how it protects people. What is it that they do that effectively ensures peoples safety? This idea will explore these questions and interview a fully trained life guard who knows the ins and outs of what it's like to be a life guard.


The sound effects during the story could be water splashing, whistles, people talking and giving advice on how to improve the stroke they're working on.

Recorded sound from a swimming pool and conversations which will be lowered for background sound.

There isn't usually music playing in a swimming pool area but swimming pools are linked to gyms which often have upbeat, pop music do get people motivated therefore I would go for the same type of music in this story.

I will use dialogue from the interview and then if need be will cut bits out. For this story I will keep in the questions that I ask so it's clear what she's answering. It will also make more sense if I keep the questions in as they might be a bit confusing if I take them out.

A) Sound effectsa sound other than speech or music made artificially for use in a play, film, or other broadcast production.



Above is an example of different sound effects created in a studio to match a pre recorded video. When they are beating each other up, they use a piece of meat in the studio to make it sound like someone's actually getting beaten up. In a visual product the sounds need to match up exactly to the video to make it look real, whereas if it were just a radio listening product then it wouldn't matter because no one would be able to see whats going on, they just imagine it.

B) Atmospheric soundAmbient sound (AKA ambient audio, ambience, atmosphere, or background noise) means the background sounds which are present in a scene or location. Common ambient sounds include wind, water, birds, crowds, office noises, traffic, etc.




Above is a video that shows different ways foley artists create atmospheric sounds.They show how they generate the idea of wind blowing through a cape. This is simply achieved by getting a microphone and shaking a cape up and down. They also layer different sounds on top to make it more realistic. Such as feet walking on snow and snow falling.

C) Musicvocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.




Universal Studios use a band to create their instrumental sounds. When there's music on radio it stimulates reality and creates something off screen which isn't there. Visually it helps us get in the mood. For example in the video above they were building up different instruments to create tension and makes the listener feel intimidated.  

D) Dialogue/speecha conversation between two or more people as a feature of a book, play, or film.



Dialogue is a very important part of sound. It can be rerecorded in post production if there are other noises that take over the speech. Smaller sounds that make the scene feel more real and alive are also added in post production. In radio there is usually a script set out just like one in theatre which also includes technical directions for sound effects and music.

C) Meaning (how does it enhance audience understanding? Create tension, reinforce genre/conventions, establishes mood, helps to establish time/location, enhances characterisation, use of silence, impact on audience)

1st Media Product - Film (Drive)




Purpose: The purpose of this entertain and sell the product, which is a film called 'Drive'.  This film is an action film so the first part of the film needs to build suspense and get the viewers attention straight away.
Elements: The are a lot of different elements in this first five minute opening sequence such as car screeches, sirens, radios, dialogue. Its obvious whats happening when your'e just listening to this sequence because of these elements. There are crickets at the very beginning so it gives us a sense of what time of day it is. The accents in this first part are american and it also says on the radio that they're in Los Angeles. Another clue about this is that it's quite clear that they're in a city and not in the middle of nowhere because of all the background noise and cars noises.
Meaning: This creates a lot on tension which helps to establish the genre. There also not a lot of dialogue which could link to how the character acts throughout the rest of the film.

2nd Media Product - Radio Show

Purpose: The purpose of this radio clip is educational and informative. The Met Office recently issued a report which states that the growing season in the UK is now one month longer than it was in the 1960s. Keen gardeners may notice that spring bulbs are coming up much earlier and that fruit like apples are flowering sooner in the year whilst some farmers can now bring in their harvest before the end of the summer. This clip tells people what's happening and why.
Elements: At the beginning they use the sound of a lawn mower to create a sense of whats going to be talked about. The man goes straight in after the lawn mower sound has turned off to say about how mowing the lawn is his least favourite job in the garden. The dialogue continues through as the two men discuss the changing seasons.
Meaning: This is very helpful to gardeners and people interested in how the world works. It's an interesting thing to know about and will be useful knowledge. This clip establishes where and when the seasons are which helps the audiences understanding.

3rd Media Product - Video Game (Deadpool)



Purpose: The purpose of this video game clip is to show the viewers how the game works, what it's like and if its worth playing. This youtuber has millions of viewers which they all keep up to date with his new videos. This video is potentially selling the game depending on what his thoughts about the game are. If they're positive his viewers will obviously go and play it but if he doesn't think its a good game then most people probably won't bother. This clip is also for entertainment purposes and is informative.
Elements: There are many sound effects layered on top of the game to make it more interesting. When the character is running around you can slightly hear his feet tapping along the floor as he runs. For example at 14.30 there are sound effects of hi killing the bad guy. The character talks and helps you figure out the objective of the game and the guy actually playing the game talks throughout the video.
Meaning: This clip enhances the viewers understanding by having a walk through of the game. Throughout the game it's quite dark and di so we get the feeling it's all going on a night time. The gamer is silent whilst the character is talking so he and the viewers can understand what it's saying.
